Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Virology (079918) at University of Surrey

Herpes Simplex Virus Morphogenesis

Applications are invited for an MRC-funded Postdoctoral Research Fellow based in the herpesvirus research group run by Prof. Gill Elliott in the Department of Microbial Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a comprehensive research programme into the biology of herpes simplex virus, with particular focus on the virus-host cell interactions involved in virus envelopment. The successful candidate will use fluorescently tagged viruses and virus mutants to track envelopment by cell biological and biochemical analysis, with the aim of elucidating the role of three cellular transport factors that we have found to be crucial for virus morphogenesis.

We are therefore looking for a highly motivated individual with or about to obtain a PhD in a biological science and proven ability in virus research. A background in confocal microscopy would also be highly beneficial.

In addition to salary you will receive a generous annual leave entitlement and excellent development opportunities.  Benefits package includes final salary pension, childcare assistance and leisure facilities.

Our laboratory is located at the beautiful campus of the University of Surrey, close to London.  The University has recently made significant investment in the expansion of virology research in the Department of Microbial and Cellular Sciences, where research is focused on the molecular and cellular basis of disease caused by a range of important human and animal pathogens.

When completing the online application form, please ensure you include a supporting statement and eithercomplete the previous work experience and education sections of the application form orsubmit a CV.

For an informal discussion, please contact Prof. Gill Elliott (g.elliott@surrey.ac.uk).

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£31302) per annum (full-time) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate.  Once the verified original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£32236) per annum (full time).
