Research Fellow in Mathematical Modelling and Data Analysis of Shift Working Schedules in the Real World (048819) at University of Surrey
Applications are invited for a full-time Research Fellow to work with Prof Anne Skeldon (Department of Mathematics) and Prof Derk-Jan Dijk (Director of the Surrey Sleep Research Centre) as part of the project "Fatigue, alertness and risk prediction". Profs Skeldon and Dijk have developed quantitative mathematical models of sleep and circadian rhythms. This project will provide an exciting and novel opportunity to analyse data related to shift scheduling and assess the extent to which current mathematical models of sleep regulation are fit-for-purpose for predicting fatigue. With 22% of workers currently undertaking some form of shift work, better tools to mathematically model, quantify and manage the impact of shift schedules on sleep and circadian rhythms and associated fatigue could have major societal impact.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in applied mathematics or a closely-related discipline, including significant computational expertise and confidence in data-handling. The candidate should have an interest in sleep and circadian rhythms and be willing to work in a multi-disciplinary team of mathematicians, sleep and circadian rhythm researchers, and industry partners. The ideal candidate would have a willingness to accompany the industrial partner to constructions site and underground facilities as part of understanding the shift working environments. A willingness to network with other relevant industrial contacts will also be important.
The project is funded by an Impact Acceleration Account award. Initial funding is for 6 months until February 2020, but for the right candidate there may be follow-on opportunities in our vibrant multidisciplinary team.
